So significant was the Accord's drop - 14,852 units - and so impressive was the Toyota Corolla/Matrix increase - 46,098 units - that the Accord fell off its usual second-place perch. (The Accord regained second spot in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2013.)

After climbing from 13th spot in 2004 to the 11th position in 2005, the Ford Mustang was America's tenth-best-selling car in 2006, fewer than 11,000 sales out of the eighth spot and 2677 sales clear of the 11th-ranked Chevrolet Malibu.
The Mustang was one of three Fords on this list of America's ten best-selling cars in calendar year 2006. With big gains from the still-fresh Fusion nameplate, an additional 617 GT sales, and the Mustang's meaningful improvement, Ford brand car sales were up 9.2% in 2006 despite the losses produced by its two most popular nameplates and the declines reported by the Thunderbird, Crown Victoria, and Five Hundred.
