The top five were a tightly knit group. More particularly, there was only a 558-sale spread between the third-ranked Toyota Corolla and fifth-ranked Nissan Altima. All seven of America's favourite cars posted significant year-over-year improvements in May, from the Chevrolet Cruze's 40.5% jump to the Altima's 12.9% increase.

The Altima was just one of three Nissans in the top 19. The Camry led three Toyotas in the top 13. Honda landed the Accord in second; the Civic in fourth. There were three Chevrolets in the top 17, four Hyundais and Kias in the top 15, and two Fords in the top eight. The Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang were the 22nd and 23rd-best-selling cars in America, respectively.
Toyota has updated the Camry for the 2015 model year and will need to move outgoing 2014s to make room. The 2015, pictured above, is meant to fend off increasingly potent challengers from Honda, Nissan, and Ford.
