Thermal Club GT: GMG takes victory at first-ever event at The Thermal Club

GMG Racing Press Release

THERMAL, Calif. (November 10, 2014) - Two years ago, when Global Motorsports Group (GMG) team owner James Sofronas took the first-ever laps on the just-laid asphalt at The Thermal Club, few who would have guessed what that would evolve into in 2014. With The Thermal Club, a brand-new, private motorsports facility located just outside of Palm Springs conducting their first-ever official race this past weekend, Sofronas and GMG stamped their names in the history books taking first place honors at The Thermal GT Invitational.

“It’s a great honor to take the first-ever win at The Thermal Club,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “Ever since I first heard about this place several years ago, I’ve been keen to watch the progression, and it’s remarkable to see how it has all come together. This was the first official race for the facility and it only further proved what a great place this is for all-comers. We were able to beat out some pretty cool competition, but more importantly, the layout proved excellent for racing and all of our customers had a great time.”

With the GT Invitational running as the first official race for the facility, the event drew a significant interest from a number of teams, drivers, and manufacturers. While Sofronas took the wheel of his trademark No. 14 Spyder Audi R8 LMS ultra, the event featured such marques as Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, BMW, and Lotus.

Emphasizing both The Thermal Club and GMG’s desire to use the circuit as a means to develop all-comers, the team would also bring many of their club drivers including Chip Romer, Chris Thompson, and Andy Wilzoch.

While GMG is most recently known for their endeavors with Audi in the Pirelli World Challenge and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, the heritage of the company is actually rooted in club racing, including a long history supporting Porsche and BMW entries. Supporting everything from a Porsche GT3 R all the way to a BMW E46 M3 at the event, GMG has always prided itself on a vertically-integrated development platform. Having been in business for well over a decade, the team can handle everything from an entry-level track day car all the way to the top levels of sports car.

With the late fall and early winter providing excellent weather to visit the facility, GMG is happy to welcome all inquires and questions related to The Thermal Club and the many opportunities it has to offer both on and off track.
