Though Camry sales dipped somewhat in August, many of the Accord's lesser rivals also managed significant year-over-year U.S. sales increases. Ford Fusion volume jumped 20% to 29,452 units, the Fusion's fifth month above 29K since March of last year. Hyundai Sonata volume was up 25% to 21,092 units.
Mazda 6 sales jumped 33%, though at just 5631 sales, the Mazda sold just once for every 9.1 Accords. August did mark the fourth Mazda 6 sales month above 5000 units in the last half-year.
In fact, Subaru's Legacy outsold the 6 by jumping 51% in Subaru's best-ever sales month. The Legacy only accounted for 12% of all Subaru sales, however, as the Forester, Outback, XV Crosstrek, and Impreza all generated significantly higher sales.
More discouraging numbers were posted by Chevrolet (Malibu volume slid 3%) and Volkswagen (Passat sales dropped 10%). Their market share in the midsize category fell to 10.4% from 12.0% a year ago.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Outback and Venza listed with midsize SUVs, too... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
