Incidentally, while sales of the vast majority of major players have decreased in 2014, the Volkswagen Passat has been a bright spot. Passat volume is up 9% in 2014. But while the segment showed signs of small recovery in August specifically, Passat volume plunged 22%.

Sales of the Chevrolet Malibu jumped 117% last month. The Hyundai Sonata also reported more than double the volume it achieved one year ago, enough to make the Sonata Canada's midsize car leader for the second consecutive month.

Sales of the Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, and Chrysler 200 also improved. Total Chrysler Group midsize car sales, however,  slid 27% as FCA decides to go it alone with a single midsize car. The Avenger is dead.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Outback and Venza listed with midsize SUVs, too... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
