Between the Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue, two Hyundais, and the class-leading Ford Escape, the category added 4605 sales to April 2013's total.

Moreover, the Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Journey, GMC Terrain, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and Volkswagen Tiguan all sold at a faster clip than they did a year ago.

It's not as though April 2013 was a bad month for all these vehicles. A year ago, Escape sales jumped 26%. Likewise, sales of the Rogue, Santa Fe, Journey, Terrain, CX-5, Forester, and Tiguan were on the rise a year ago. And again, they increased in April 2014.

Ford Canada sold a record number of Escapes in 2013 but they're on pace to top 50,000 units in 2014, double what the company sold as recently as 2006, when the Escape was riding the top of the SUV/crossover standings. Just as it is now, only with bigger numbers.

* vehicle also displayed in another GCBC segment breakdown
GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the Encore and XV Crosstrek are listed with small cars, too, and the tweener-sized Sorento and Santa Fe are shown with midsize SUVs and small SUVs, and the pricey FJ Cruiser and Xterra with midsizers, as well... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. GCBC has historically shown the Liberty with midsize SUVs but as the Cherokee - truly not midsize inside - replaces the Liberty, proper year-over-year comparison requires seeing the Liberty listed here with these smaller utility vehicles.
